An unusual request for help was received by the Pest County Search and Rescue Service because of a cat stuck in a tree who was attacked by two magpies.
As the staff of the rescue service reported on their social media page, they arrived at the Újpest housing estate following a public call, where passers-by were watching with concern a cat stuck on a tree who was being pecked at by two magpies. The weakened animal was brought down from the tree and handed over to the staff of the Animal Rescue League, who also rushed to the scene, for further care.
They also published a video of the rescue:
Recently, numerous media outlets have reported on crow attacks as well, stating that birds attacked people. The website index.hu contacted the Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Society about the events.
As Zoltán Orbán, the spokesperson of the society explained, there is definitely no aggression behind these cases, but natural chick-defending behaviour. At this time of year, birds are teaching their chicks to fly and instinctively defend against all approaching threats. The parents are particularly sensitive to approaching people, and thus they attempt to drive them away from their young by aiming at the head and flying at them in an attacking manner.
According to experts, the most effective method is not to try to scare away the bird, as this may encourage an even more intense attack. Instead, one should try to leave the area as quickly as possible with head lowered.
In case of injury, the wound must be washed immediately and then disinfected. If the wound is deep, or if the person has not had a tetanus injection within the past 5 years, a doctor should be consulted.
