It may seem irrational, what our pets are sometimes capable of getting frightened by. Besides individual fears, there are also objects in our homes that scare most cats out of their wits.
Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook are full of cute cat videos, and let’s admit it, we love scrolling through them during idle moments – after all, what could be more relaxing than our favourite fluffy creatures?! Sometimes, however, something goes wrong, and on the altar of humour and likes, we indeed sacrifice safety and even the dignity of our animals. The kitchen does, in fact, hide an object that most cats freak out over.
The video above is trending among Instagram cat lovers, and it doesn’t show just one owner, but recordings from many cat owners on a similar topic. Cats are endlessly getting scared one after another by a fairly everyday kitchen appliance, namely the toaster. They flee in giant, terrified jumps from the popping toast slices, often followed by a loud thud.
However, the video raises serious safety concerns, especially because we know that it has happened several times in our country (Hungary) too that a velvety paw caused a house fire by turning on the induction hob.
Naturally, satisfying its curiosity, because it always has to be – preferably in the way – wherever we are. Especially when food is involved. And with that, we’ve arrived at one of the most dangerous rooms for a cat: the kitchen, and more specifically, the kitchen counter. Let’s have no illusions: our cats – even the best-behaved ones – will definitely check if any wagyu beef slice was left over from dinner for them.
The very fact that they like to observe from above is an evolutionary remnant, stemming from their predatory nature. Despite this, the human-created environment hides numerous dangers. If a cat jumps onto the table or the kitchen counter, it can easily get injured, as the objects found there can be dangerous – whether made of glass, metal, or any other material. If they get scared of something while up there and knock something over, they can easily injure themselves.
Since they are opportunistic hunters, they always exploit any available opportunity and will eat or taste something even if they’re not hungry. Most human food is dangerous for them! And for humans, it’s not the most advantageous from a health perspective if they consume food that the cat has previously tasted.
