You should also know whether you have anything to do regarding your cat’s microchip under the new EU decision.
As reported by Dívány, the European Parliament has voted that every dog and cat living in the territory of the European Union must be provided with a microchip in the future.
The highly welcome, long-awaited decision was probably generated by the attempt to prevent breeding activities that have been uncovered in several EU member states in recent times. With compulsory microchipping, they would prevent fraud related to animals, put an end to illegal animal trade, and at the same time improve the standard of animal welfare – according to the decision-makers.
As written, currently in 24 member states it is mandatory to provide small animals with microchips, primarily dogs. The systems are neither detailed enough, nor – more importantly – uniform. The only one that contains the records of multiple member states is Europetnet, which is privately owned and contains the registrations of only 17 member countries.
In order to reduce illegal dog trade, representatives of the European Parliament adopted a much stricter package than the proposal: according to this, every pet arriving from a non-EU country will also have to be registered before entering EU territory,
moreover, this does not only apply to dogs offered for sale, but to all domestic pets.
