A wildlife camera in the Börzsöny Mountains captured an unexpected encounter. The footage shows a wildcat clashing with a fox that had wandered into its territory. As we learned, this wasn’t the first time the local wildcat stirred up excitement.

We have reported on the wildcats living in the Börzsöny before. These magnificent animals, in addition to their impressive appearance, possess a strong territorial instinct—just like our household pets—and they fiercely defend what they consider theirs. In the video below, a fox can be seen sniffing around curiously and nibbling until, suddenly, an enraged wildcat appears. Or rather, bursts into the frame, and like fire, chases after the already fleeing bushy-tailed intruder. After driving the predator away from its territory, the wildcat returns, still scanning the area alertly in case the trespasser dares to come back.

"I Wish I Could Be Out There More Often"

We reached out to Ferenc Povazsan, the creator of the footage, who told us many fascinating things. He has been observing wildlife for years. Initially, he started as a hobby photographer, watching the local fauna—mainly birds—from a glass hide. However, over time, he became curious about what happens when he isn’t around. “I wish I could be out there more often,” the photographer said.

That’s why he installed the camera, which has provided even more insight into the animal world. One of the first creatures captured on camera was a wildcat—so intriguing that Ferenc decided to focus specifically on observing it.

After about six months, the animal started appearing even during the day. Its distinctive feature was a lopsided “smile,” clearly visible in the pictures—most likely the result of a fight, perhaps with a fox or a badger. Ferenc was even lucky enough to encounter this wildcat in person.

The wildcat in the current footage is a different individual, but it’s clear that this one also has surprises in store for viewers.
