To be precise, it is not a single specific product that is highly toxic to our purring companions, but rather an active ingredient that is used in products developed to address a growing problem affecting both women and men alike.

Below, you can learn what minoxidil is, which products contain it, and why it poses a deadly danger to cats.

What is minoxidil?

Minoxidil is a pharmaceutical active ingredient that was originally developed as a blood pressure–lowering medication. During testing, however, it was discovered to be extremely effective at stimulating hair growth. It is a vasodilator, meaning it improves blood circulation in the scalp, thereby prolonging the growth (anagen) phase of hair follicles. In simple terms, it helps hair remain on the scalp for a longer period of time. Numerous clinical trials have proven it to be highly effective in cases of androgenetic hair loss, and it is also frequently used successfully to treat diffuse hair loss.

Minoxidil is not a hormone, so it does not interfere with the hormonal system. However, in order to remain effective, it must be used once or twice daily even after hair loss has stopped. It is available in both foam and solution forms and is safe for use by both women and men. This is not the case for cats, dogs, or other pets!

Why is minoxidil a deadly poison for cats?

We considered the details above important to emphasize because minoxidil is a genuinely effective—and therefore increasingly popular—active ingredient, meaning more and more people are likely to use it. Products containing minoxidil are available under several brand names, and the packaging usually advertises this “miracle ingredient” prominently. Even if not highlighted elsewhere, it must always appear in the ingredient list—so if you are a cat owner purchasing a hair growth product, be sure to check this carefully.

Minoxidil is particularly dangerous for cats because they are unable to properly metabolize this substance. As a result, it accumulates in their bodies, and even very small amounts can be fatal. Due to its strong vasodilating effect, it can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure as well as severe heart and circulatory problems in pets.

You might think that simply storing the product away—like medications or cleaning agents—would prevent any issues, but unfortunately this does not necessarily eliminate the risk. Poisoning can occur not only through direct ingestion, but also if a cat licks minoxidil residue from its owner’s skin, hair, clothing, or even from pillows. Symptoms may include weakness, breathing difficulties, fluid accumulation in the lungs, and in severe cases, death. For this reason, veterinarians clearly warn that the use of minoxidil in households with cats, dogs, or other pets poses a significant risk and is strongly discouraged.

Unfortunately, as a cat owner, you will need to look for alternative methods to promote hair growth—but don’t despair. Besides minoxidil, there are other effective solutions available. It is advisable to consult a specialist who can determine the underlying cause of hair loss and recommend the most appropriate treatment and method accordingly.
