Why Cats Choose the Carpet Over the Floor When They Throw Up

The whole house is available, yet somehow they always manage to aim for the carpet. Of course, when nature calls, we don’t want to be paranoid—but there are just too many coincidences. We had no choice but to find an explanation for this strange habit.

And indeed, it turns out there is a reason, even if it doesn’t seem that convincing to us. And no—it’s not because your furry friend wants to test your patience and see where your breaking point is. So let’s look at why cats prefer the carpet when they need to vomit!

Why Cats Vomit on the Carpet Instead of the Floor

1.) Comfort

When our four-legged family members feel nauseous, comfort matters to them too. They often lie down on a soft rug or carpet to feel as comfortable as possible in those unpleasant moments. But when there’s no turning back, they usually don’t have the time or motivation to move away from their cozy spot. What’s more, since the process is uncomfortable, they instinctively seek out a surface where they can firmly brace themselves, without slipping.

2.) Instinct

Pets instinctively try to hide signs of pain and illness. That includes making sure any vomit is less noticeable. In nature, for example, they might throw up on soil or sand, which they can even cover up. On a carpet, vomit stains are less visible than on kitchen tiles, so your cat may feel safer and less exposed.

3.) Smell

When pets are in distress, they often choose a place that smells like natural ground or grass. Unlike tiles or hardwood, carpets and doormats—despite our best cleaning efforts—trap more outdoor dirt and odors. To a cat, that may resemble the kind of surface they would naturally choose.

How to Clean Vomit Out of Carpet

Any place that has already been “hit” once is far more likely to be chosen again—unless you clean it thoroughly and eliminate all traces of odor. Even the faintest lingering smell acts like a green light for your cat to use that same spot again.

Here’s a gentle, simple method to clean it up effectively:

You’ll need:

  • baking soda
  • vinegar
  • water
  • an empty spray bottle
  • cloths

How to:

  1. First, wipe up the vomit with a damp cloth.
  2. Sprinkle baking soda over the stain and let it sit for about an hour to absorb the moisture.
  3. In the spray bottle, mix vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio. Spray this solution onto the area; it will start to fizz. Once the fizzing subsides, wipe away as much of the baking soda as possible with a cloth.
  4. Spray the spot again with the vinegar solution, then rub it with a clean cloth. Repeat as needed until the area feels clean.

It’s a good idea to open a window during the process, and of course, make sure your cat doesn’t lick the cleaning agents!
