An automatic feeder is a big help for owners, since it ensures, that the cats at the right time get to the daily bites. But what happens, if the four-legged ones themselves take into their paw the control? Cats are extremely creative, if it is about food, however the question arises: is the automatic feeder indeed always practical, and how many times a day is it worth to feed our purring friends?

The automatic feeder was invented for the comfort of the owners, however for the heroes of the below video it rather means challenge and entertainment. The cats’ curiosity and resourcefulness often overwrite human ingenuity. With some trickery, switching and persistent attempts they work on it until they obtain the long-awaited bites. All the while with every movement they bring a smile to our face. Here they are, the cunning furry ones!

How many times should the cat eat? When is the automatic feeder a good decision?

The automatic feeder fundamentally serves, that the owner may calmly trust, that their favourite always at the right time gets to the proper tasty bite. For in a lucky case, our purring friends should at least three times a day get to food. Many owners however rather would give four-five times too, this however in most cases may mean trouble, since they work, are not always at home, or cannot arrive home in time. In such cases an automatic feeder can mean big help, which is available in different versions: there is one, which only dispenses dry, and there is one, which dispenses dry and wet food too.

Feeder types and their use

The safest are the pre-programmable types, which give exactly the set amount, at the proper time. The more advanced appliances can also be controlled from wi-fi, through application, so the settings can be modified remotely too, indeed they also have internal memory, so that in case of a sudden power outage the cat does not remain hungry. Among the newest developments there is also microchip technology, which ensures, that in the case of more animals always only the designated favourite may have access to the food.

Let’s look also at the advantages and disadvantages of the automatic feeder!

Advantages:

  • supplementary tool for the cat’s feeding, if the owner cannot always feed in time;
  • can help in ensuring regular feeding;
  • testable and customisable, that the cat accepts the feeder.

Disadvantages / warnings:

  • does not replace personal care; a cat must not be left alone for more than 12 hours;
  • only usable safely, if the owner, or a reliable person regularly checks;
  • in case of negative reaction (the animal gets frightened, does not eat, fiddles with the machine) another solution must be sought.

Altogether we can say, that the automatic feeder can be a useful supplement, however it does not replace the personal feeding and attention, which a cat can get from their owner. An automatic feeder thus can be of service – but only until the cats figure out their own rules.
