If you have ever found your tabby curled up on top of the fridge, in the sink, or in a shoebox, you are not alone. Cats love to surprise us by discovering new and strange places. Or they might barge in on us at the most unexpected moments – while showering or using the toilet – giving us quite a fright. With a cat around, there are no secrets!
While browsing Facebook, we came across the video below, in which cats surprise their owners in the most unexpected situations, or simply snuggle up to their chosen person in need of a little affection. In our article, we also cover why we might find our purring friends in strange places, and why they feel the need to follow us everywhere.
Cats’ behaviour is often unpredictable – one moment they’re purring in your lap, the next they’re watching from the top of the fridge. But why are they so drawn to unusual places? The explanation lies in their instincts: like their ancestors, they are guided by a sense of safety, curiosity, and comfort. Whether it’s a box, a cupboard, or a cosy spot behind the sofa, every place has its own appeal. These curious and agile animals can squeeze into the narrowest gaps and hide in the most unusual spots, so their behaviour often surprises their owners. Sometimes, however, these hiding places can also be signs of fear, anxiety, or a desire for solitude.
It can also happen that a tabby is so affectionate that they develop deep feelings for their guardian – much like a dog – and even try to protect them if they sense danger. This can show itself in following them everywhere, keeping a watchful eye on the smallest family members, or hissing when a stranger arrives. Cats tend to form stronger bonds with female guardians, as they usually receive more attention and communication from them. Many cats also form a special relationship with children – warming, watching over, and even “caring for” them as if they were their own kittens.

Fun fact: as seen in our video, cats are even capable of following us into the bathroom. This may be because, instinctively, they want to protect us, as when we are sitting on the toilet we are motionless – and, moreover, the smells might attract predators.
Of course, besides affection, there are several other reasons why our cat might, so to speak, not let us exist in peace.

It’s undeniably adorable when your cat follows you even to bed and finds the perfect spot to rest on you. Learn more about this charming behaviour and the possible reasons behind it.
