How to Keep Cats Out of Your Garden

Under the currently applicable laws, animal owners are required to ensure the proper and safe housing of their animals, provide professional care, and prevent them from escaping. This means that, in principle, cats should also be kept within the owner’s property. In reality, however, many people in Hungary keep their cats as outdoor or free-roaming pets. This may disturb neighbors and residents in the area. Unfortunately, there are also many stray cats roaming the streets who may consider our yards to be part of their territory.

Below, we will look at several methods you can use to keep unfamiliar cats away from your garden.

Methods to Deter Unfamiliar Cats from Your Garden

We cannot guarantee that all of the methods listed will be equally effective, but we can assure you that they are safe and humane in every case, and their use does not violate the law.

1.) Ultrasonic cat repellent

Ultrasonic cat repellent devices detect passing cats using infrared sensors and then emit high-frequency sounds—usually inaudible to the human ear—to scare away curious animals. These devices often run on solar power, and you may need to install more than one of them.

Importantly, they do not harm animals. Although there is no clear scientific evidence proving their effectiveness, many users report positive experiences with them on forums and review sites.

2.) Motion-activated water sprinkler repellent

This device connects to a garden hose, so it can only be used during the warmer months. The system typically runs on solar power and includes a motion sensor that sprays water at any passing animal.

Of course, this does not harm the animal either, but the experience is unpleasant enough that there is a good chance it will avoid the property in the future. One drawback is that you will likely need several units if your yard is large.

3.) Cat repellent sprays

Powders and sprays are generally most effective when you know that visiting cats tend to linger in a particular spot or mark a specific area. Spraying or scattering these products on such surfaces causes the unpleasant taste and/or smell to transfer onto the cat, discouraging future visits.

If purchased from reliable sources, these products are guaranteed not to harm cats. However, they must be applied persistently, as rain may wash them away, wind may disperse them, and their intensity may decrease over time.

4.) Cat-repelling plants

Coleus canina, also known as the “scaredy-cat plant,” contains essential oils in its leaves that cats dislike but that are not dangerous to them. There is limited information about how effective it truly is, but it may work in situations where you want to keep cats away from a smaller area—for example, if they frequently mark the terrace, a corner of the house, or use flower beds as a toilet.

What else can you do to keep unfamiliar cats off your property?

  • Plant dense shrubs or grow thorny plants; make entry more difficult with a tall, closed fence.
  • If your main problem is that cats use your flower beds as a litter box, cover those areas with crushed stone, gravel, small rocks, or mesh.
  • Do not leave food scraps outside—neither in the compost nor elsewhere—and make sure your garbage bins are securely closed. This helps prevent food from attracting cats.

Can you catch an unfamiliar cat on your property using a live trap?

It probably goes without saying that shooting, poisoning, or otherwise killing a cat is illegal in Hungary and may result in criminal liability. However, many people wonder whether they can capture a cat on their own property.

As animal protection lawyer Dr. Cecília Kajó previously explained, using a live trap on your own property is not prohibited in itself. However, what you do with the animal once it enters the trap may have legal consequences.

„If we capture wild animals with such a trap, we may easily commit the crime of poaching. If we check the trap only rarely and an animal remains there stressed and without food or water for a long time, that is also problematic. If the animal dies and it belongs to a protected species, we could even commit the crime of environmental damage. Even if the species is not protected, leaving the animal in the trap for a long time and allowing it to suffer may still constitute animal cruelty," the expert explained.

The last resort

If you feel helpless about cats entering your yard, you can contact local animal protection organizations or the municipality. They can provide advice on how to proceed and, in the case of stray cats, may help with capture, neutering, or relocation.
