Common Mistakes in Indoor Cat Care During Autumn and Winter

Now that true autumn has arrived and the days are getting colder, it’s important to talk about proper cat care. There are several misconceptions among cat owners that can lead to poor practices.

Seasonal and weather changes affect our pets, too. As a cat owner, you should know what to pay attention to when caring for your feline during the autumn and winter months.

What’s the ideal temperature for a cat?

One of the most basic questions is determining the right temperature. Cats are naturally drawn to warmth, so it’s common to see them sleeping on or near radiators. However, if you use a stove or fireplace, make sure your cat doesn’t burn itself. Otherwise, you don’t have to worry about them overheating.

A home that’s too cold can be uncomfortable for your cat—especially if they are young, elderly, hairless, or dealing with a chronic illness, as these factors make them more sensitive to low temperatures.

Before heating season starts, make sure your cat has cozy spots to curl up in. Soft cushions, cat beds, a folded blanket on the bed, or even an old sweater of yours can do the trick. If possible, set up a resting place by a window so your cat can enjoy the warmth of the sun and watch what’s happening outside.

It’s important to remember that not every cat needs a sweater, and unnecessary use can cause discomfort or even health issues (such as skin irritation or overheating).

Overfeeding

Some owners know that animals’ caloric needs can increase during colder months—but this mainly applies to outdoor pets, who need extra energy to maintain body heat. Your indoor cat might need more calories, but always check with your veterinarian first and follow their guidance when changing your cat’s diet. Otherwise, you could easily overfeed your cat, leading to weight gain and health problems.

Inadequate coat care

During the autumn shedding season, it’s important to brush your cat more frequently to remove dead hair and keep their coat healthy. This also feels pleasant for the cat and can be a bonding, mood-lifting activity for both of you. The heating season can dry out or dull your cat’s coat. If you notice their fur becoming lackluster or unkempt, talk to your vet—nutrient deficiencies or health issues could be behind it.

Too little play and mental stimulation

Shorter days, less sunlight, and colder weather can affect cats’ mood as well. To counter this, spend more time engaging with your cat than usual. Play sessions, puzzle toys, grooming, and cuddling all help improve your cat’s mental well-being.

Pausing parasite prevention

We’ve discussed this many times before: year-round parasite protection is crucial. It’s a myth that ticks, fleas, and other parasites disappear during autumn and winter—they can still spread serious diseases. Continue protecting your cat as usual, and if you tend to forget when the next dose is due, set a reminder on your phone.
