Beyond the fact that the bond between the kitten and the fawn is truly enchanting, we also explore why deep attachment can form between animals of different species.
A very heartwarming video has surfaced online, showing a kitten and a fawn cuddling together and grooming one another. Even through a screen, you can feel the love-filled, intimate atmosphere embracing you!
As we have already discussed on our dog-focused site We Love Dogz, it is not uncommon for females to take on a motherly role toward the young of other species. This can partly be explained by the pheromones emitted by the young, which affect females, and partly by their social needs; social creatures instinctively seek closeness — even with members of other species.
Likewise, young animals raised together also seek the sense of safety that even a member of another species can provide. It is common for dogs and cats raised in the same household to care for each other’s offspring, and sibling-like bonds often form among the young. In the case of this particular video, it is not clear how the tiny kitten and the fawn came to be so close to one another, but we can assume that they share the same owner or caretaker — which would explain the strong bond.

As you can see, the kitten kneads to signal to its friend that it feels safe, calm, and relaxed. This gesture is also directed toward the mother cat, and kittens usually knead around the mammary area while nursing, which stimulates milk production.
Later in life, cats may honor their owners with this behavior, often combined with purring, which is another sign of contentment and relaxation. Kneading also helps cats stretch and exercise their limbs after a nap, and thanks to the scent glands located in their paw pads, it allows them to mark what belongs to them (again using pheromones, which play a major role in animals’ lives, including cats’).
In addition, kneading can serve as a form of self-soothing when the cat is under stress.
