We’d happily sign up for a massage like this ourselves! But why does this funny house cat knead its four-legged companion with such devotion, and what might it be saying in “cat language” at the end of the video?
Countless videos are circulating online in which cats massage blankets, sofas, or even their owners with their soft little paws… But seeing a cat knead a dog this intensely is a rare sight!
Why do so many cats knead blankets—or even your leg—as if they were working an invisible ball of pizza dough?
This so-called “kneading” is an instinctive behavior that begins in kittenhood. When kittens nurse, they massage their mother with their paws to stimulate milk flow. This experience becomes so deeply ingrained in their minds that it often resurfaces in adulthood—especially when the cat feels safe and content. What’s more, cats have scent glands in their paws, so while kneading, they are also subtly marking their territory.
The dog seen in the video is therefore undoubtedly in a privileged position: this tabby is almost certainly deeply bonded to it.
You may have noticed that adult cats rarely communicate with each other this way: meowing is primarily a form of communication that developed for addressing the mother cat—and later, humans.
With many cats, it can be observed that they meow back when we “talk to them in cat.” They learn that vocalizing brings attention, so if you meow at them often enough, they’ll eventually start responding.
