Mr. Pugsley Addams, a 2-year-old Maine Coon cat, has become the new record holder thanks to his impressively long and equally bushy tail. According to his owner, Amanda Cameron, Pugsley is curious and adventurous by nature, yet just as caring as he is mischievous.
Mr. Pugsley Addams isn’t related to the famous Addams Family, he was indeed named after the family’s mischievous son. So, let’s find out just how long the record-breaking body part of the cat with the world’s longest tail really is.
The gray Maine Coon from Minnesota (USA) was officially declared the domestic cat with the longest tail just recently: his tail measures 46.99 cm (18.5 inches), as announced by Guinness World Records on Wednesday.
His owner, Amanda Cameron, told Guinness that Pugsley’s tail had always been long, but she only began to seriously consider it after a vet visit where the subject came up. Following her children’s suggestion, she looked into the current Guinness record, and to her surprise, found out that her beloved cat’s tail was indeed longer than that of the previous titleholder. The former record holder was Rajah Shimko, a 4-year-old silver Maine Coon from Seattle (USA), whose tail was about 5 cm (2 inches) shorter than Pugsley’s. Shimko held the title for just three weeks.
According to Amanda, Pugsley is “a curious adventure-seeker with a heart of gold, who also has a reputation for being a mischievous troublemaker. He is very creative when it comes to new ways, he can be mischievous And yet, he is kind and caring and loves his momma. He is pretty level-headed, even in new situations that might be scary for some cats. He is super soft and is always purring; just a great little guy to be around. ”
Amanda shared that the family celebrated Pugsley’s record with lots of love, hugs, and kisses. As a special treat, he got his favorite shoulder massage and a beef-flavored snack. They’re excited to see how this young gentleman continues to grow and how many more records he might break in the future.
“I definitely think he is aware of his long tail. It does get in the way, especially when he is excited, and it is standing straight up when I’m trying to feed him and so it's in my face,” said Amanda to Guinness.
The Maine Coon is America’s oldest naturally occurring cat breed and also the largest domestic cat. They are often nicknamed “gentle giants.” Their thick, double-layered fur and muscular build make them well-suited to endure the cold, snowy winters of Minnesota. Their large paws function almost like snowshoes. It can take 4–5 years for them to fully mature.
The longest Maine Coon ever measured was Stewie, whose body length—from nose to tail tip—was nearly 122 cm (48 inches). Stewie passed away from cancer in 2013 at the age of 8 in Reno, Nevada (USA).
