The semi-long coat is both striking and practical: it falls softly, appears full and lush, yet is easier to manage than a classic long coat. We’ve collected 10 of the most unique semi-longhaired cat breeds that are special not only in appearance but also in temperament.

The development of a semi-long coat is the result of several factors. Genetically, the recessive genes responsible for longer hair are present, but the structure of the coat—especially the density of the undercoat—is not as extreme as in traditional longhaired breeds. Depending on the breed, the coat can be silky, thick, or even slightly wavy.

1.) Cashmere Bengal

The longhaired Bengal, also known as the Cashmere Bengal, is a rarer variation of the breed that retains the wildcat-like pattern but has a longer, silkier coat. The Bengal originated from crosses between the Asian leopard cat and domestic cats, so the heritage of its wild ancestors is still strongly visible in its appearance. Its behavior also differs from the average: it is extremely active, intelligent, and curious, requiring constant activity and mental stimulation. Many individuals are particularly interested in water and enjoy interactive play.

2.) American Bobtail

At first glance, it stands out for its unusual tail, but its true strength lies in its personality. The American Bobtail is a calm, balanced, yet playful cat that adapts easily to new situations. Many owners report that it follows them around the house almost “like a dog.” It enjoys shared activities but is not intrusive—it simply stays by your side. A stable, lovable companion for everyday life.

3.) Oriental Longhair

A slender breed similar in build to the Siamese type. The Oriental Longhair is not only elegant but also highly sociable and talkative. It constantly seeks connection, observes, and responds—it won’t let you get bored. Intelligent and active, it needs mental challenges and shared playtime. Ideal for owners who want not just a cat, but a true companion.

4.) Turkish Angora

Behind its light, almost airy appearance lies a lively and curious personality. The Turkish Angora wants to be involved in everything: it watches, explores, and stays present. It often chooses a “favorite human” to whom it forms a particularly strong bond. Agile and intelligent, it always retains its distinctive elegance. A truly “present” cat.

longhaired burmilla Longhaired burmilla

5.) Longhaired Burmilla

The Burmilla is a relatively young breed, just under 30 years old, originating from a secret mating between a chinchilla-shaded Persian belonging to Baroness Miranda von Kirchberg and a lilac Burmese cat. Besides the shorthaired version, a semi-longhaired variety also exists. In addition to its silky coat, it is beloved for its calm, balanced nature. It forms a strong bond with its owner but is not pushy—more of a quiet companion who simply enjoys being near you.

laperm LaPerm

6.) LaPerm

With its wavy or curly coat, it is one of the most uniquely looking cat breeds. Playful and curious, but not overly active, it is also friendly and affectionate. The LaPerm is very people-oriented, loves to cuddle, sit in laps, and connect, often seeking physical contact. This is a breed that doesn’t just exist alongside you—it truly forms a bond.

7.) Longhaired Highlander

A wild appearance paired with a surprisingly friendly nature characterizes this breed with curled-back ears. Despite its striking looks, the Highlander is very playful and open. It enjoys movement, new stimuli, and learns quickly. Not a passive type, it actively participates in everyday life and thrives when things are happening around it. Interestingly, it was only officially recognized as a breed last year, in 2025.

cymric Cymric

8.) Cymric

Round shapes, a soft coat, and a calm presence—the Cymric is a true family cat. Friendly, balanced, and adaptable, it fits easily into different lifestyles. Not overly active, but still playful and curious. It enjoys company and gets along well with children and other animals. A reliable and lovable everyday companion.

selkirk rex Selkirk rex

9.) Selkirk Rex

With its soft, curly coat, it’s hard to decide whether it resembles a lamb or a teddy bear more. The Selkirk Rex is an especially gentle breed that enjoys being petted. Calm and balanced, it handles the bustle of family life well. Not dominant, more adaptable, it loves being close to its owner—but in a non-demanding way.

nebelung Nebelung

10.) Nebelung

A rarer, elegant cat with a silvery, shimmering gray coat. The Nebelung is a sensitive, gentle, and somewhat reserved cat that, although slow to open up, forms deep bonds with its family. It prefers a calm, predictable environment and does not handle change well—whether it’s moving house or dinner being late for once.
