Cats have a number of interesting habits that may seem strange from a human perspective, but even we rarely come across something like this. We looked into what might be behind this behavior.

We came across a video on Instagram in which a ginger cat, with its ears pulled back, meows next to its owner’s bare thighs, then tries to emphasize its message with a gentle but clearly meaningful bite.

The little aggressor practically drives its owner all the way to the wardrobe and only calms down once the woman puts on a pair of pants. After that, it comfortably sprawls out on the now-covered legs and, if we can believe the caption of the video, causes numbness in its two-legged subject with a satisfying 45-minute nap.

Cats are creatures of habit

Cats are very sensitive beings: they can react strongly to any changes affecting their routine or environment. Of course, this varies by breed (and by individual cat): while British Shorthair cats, for example, adapt quite easily to different life situations and changes, other cats may show signs of stress even if you simply rearrange the room. The ginger cat in the video likely belongs to the latter group and quite literally clings to its habits tooth and nail.

Could the cat be sensory-sensitive?

Watching the footage, the question may rightly arise: could this ginger cat be sensory-sensitive? Is it even possible to diagnose an animal with such a psychological condition? Sensory sensitivity, or sensory integration disorder, is a human neurological condition in which the brain has difficulty processing stimuli received through the senses—whether light, sound, touch, smells, or movement. Its symptoms may include hypersensitivity or sensation-seeking behavior. For sensory-sensitive children, everyday sensory input can often feel unbearable; they cannot control their reactions and may express their frustration in extreme ways.

More likely individual sensitivity than a neurological disorder

Anthropomorphizing is one of the most common mistakes we can make when interpreting a cat’s behavior: it can lead us astray if we project our own human emotional and motivational frameworks onto another species. For this reason, it is not advisable to attribute human conditions and neurological symptoms to our cat, which—unlike us—is still genetically very close to its predatory ancestors. For cats, sensitivity was a tool for survival: they detected and perceived every tiny signal and movement. It’s true that many now only “hunt” in our living rooms, but their sensitivity remains—and one manifestation of this may be that the amusing cat in the video is genuinely bothered by its owner’s bare legs.
